Kickin’ it with Kyrn! Idaho’s 2022 CMNHospitals #Champion

In June of 2017, 11-year-old Kyrn was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in her right leg and immediately had to undergo intense inpatient chemotherapy at St. Luke’s Children’s. Following months of chemotherapy and time spent in her “second home,” Kyrn underwent surgery for a full distal femur replacement at Primary Children’s in Utah. After the procedure, Kyrn returned to Idaho where she continued to receive chemotherapy and learned how to walk again. Six months later, she was able to ring the bell at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute, celebrating the start of a new chapter for her and her family.

As Kyrn was nearing the end of her physical therapy in spring of 2018, the bone that was holding the titanium rod to her femur snapped while she was walking to her bedroom. She was rushed back to Primary Children’s for an emergency revision surgery and returned home following surgery to receive care and therapy at St. Luke’s Children’s.

Exactly one year after her first diagnosis, Kyrn’s Osteosarcoma retuned in her left wrist and she was admitted to St. Luke’s Children’s again, this time with a more extensive chemotherapy therapy plan. She completed ten rounds of neuro-toxic inpatient chemotherapy (or as she says, “a string of exotically named chemicals”)- staying in the hospital for multiple weeks at a time, until she rung her second bell in May of 2019.

Because of the long-term effects of the second chemotherapy treatment, Kyrn lives with incomplete Fanconi Syndrome in both of her kidneys and has dyslexia. Kyrn visits St. Luke’s Children’s regularly for ongoing scans, neuro testing, therapy, and observations.

She is thriving as a member of her high school’s color guard team, being an incredible friend, sister and daughter and loves spending time in Idaho’s great outdoors!
